ABOUT RYAN:

We’re excited to welcome Ryan to the WA SURF team as a kiteboarding instructor for the 2024/25 season. Originally from Queensland, Ryan has been riding since he was 10 years old, inspired by his dad, a former windsurfer. Starting lessons alongside his dad, Ryan quickly found his passion for kiting, and 14 years later, he’s mastered everything from big air and kite foiling to wave riding and unhooked tricks.

Ryan recently made the move to Perth and is loving WA’s legendary wind conditions. Whether he’s soaring in big air sessions or cruising on a kite foil, Ryan adapts to whatever the day brings, making the most of every opportunity to get out on the water.

Teaching comes naturally to Ryan, who earned his KA Instructor qualification last year. While he’s been instructing professionally for just over a year, he’s spent the past six years sharing his skills, helping friends and fellow riders progress. Ryan teaches everything kite-related, from beginner lessons to advanced clinics for twin-tip, strapless, and foil riders.

Ryan’s favourite part of instructing is watching his students progress and sharing their excitement. Whether it’s seeing a beginner get up on the board and ride for the first time, or an advanced kiter landing a new trick, Ryan loves being part of the journey. He’s also passionate about inspiring the next generation of kiters and hopes to run progression clinics for juniors in the future.

When he’s not teaching, Ryan is competing. He’s competed in competitions all around Australia for years now, recently claiming the Men’s Division title at the CORE Big Air Nationals in Augusta, Western Australia, and represents big brands like CORE, Ride Engine, and Cloud 9 Foils on their international teams.

Ryan’s advice for people just starting out kiteboarding? “Start with lessons. They’re key for safety and learning the right techniques. Plus, you’ll know if kiting’s for you without committing to gear straight away.”
