ABOUT DUCO:

Meet Duco Flier, one of the newest kiteboarding instructors to join the WA SURF team. Originally from the Netherlands, Duco began kiteboarding at the age of 12, and over the past decade, he has travelled the world chasing the wind. He spent time in Townsville most recently before driving across Australia to join us in Safety Bay this season.

Growing up in a family of kitesurfers, Duco was introduced to the sport at 10 years old by his parents, who loved the sport so much that they were keen to get their kids out on the water with them. After a short break, Duco rediscovered his love for kitesurfing at 12 and hasn't looked back since. His family remains a huge part of his journey, with his father, mother, stepmother, brother, and stepbrothers all sharing the same passion. His dad still outrides him in waves though – something Duco is determined to change!

With 7 years of experience as an IKO-qualified instructor, Duco’s kiteboarding journey has taken him around the globe. He’s taught in the Netherlands, the Canary Islands, South Africa, and now Australia. While he's skilled in all disciplines, his true passion lies in big air and wave riding. Duco loves strong winds, especially 30 knots or more, where he can really push his limits in both air and waves.

His favourite part of being an instructor is seeing students progress, especially when they make big improvements in a short time. The happiness and confidence they gain from the sport fuel his passion for teaching. As for Duco’s favourite kiting spot? Cape Town, South Africa, where the strong winds and perfect waves offer the ultimate ride.

Duco’s advice for people keen to give kiteboarding a go is don’t be intimidated! While the sport can seem daunting, with the right mindset, kitesurfing is safer than most people think. Stay smart, stay safe, and enjoy the ride!
